My husband is extremely enthusiastic about being a recreational boater, I have an undying love of the water from years of competitive swimming and thankfully, both our kids love the water too.
When we initially started to talk about owning our own boat, we would use terms like “if” and “someday”. We would look at boats online or would stop by roadside listings and dealers trying to get a feel for what was out there, but we just weren’t ready to take the plunge. Then we stumbled upon an express cruiser complete with a forward cabin, a camper cover (so we can overnight!) and a swim platform. She was the perfect boat for our family, our boating style and most importantly, our budget! (Woo Hoo!)
So, Dave brought our “new” Four Winns Sundowner home. Yes, we loved our “new” boat, the Kiss Me Kate. Yep, we were on our way to being a boating family. Oh, one problem… it was March in New York, and the boating season wouldn’t kick-off for a few months. This gave us some much needed time to prepare the boat (and our family) for the season.
First, I registered to take a NYS Boating Safety Course at Sea Tow’s corporate headquarters in Southold, NY. My husband has his U.S.C.G. Captain’s License already so he did not take the course and Ayla was too young, so it was just me and Miles. The 8-hour course provided invaluable information on so many important topics and we successfully earned our NYS Boating Certification. With this certification, Miles, who was only 10 years old at the time, could take a powerboat out on the water solo (YIKES!)
And this was how our adventure began - we had our boat, our safety certifications and equipment – it was time to let our boat splash! Check out the next edition of Sea Tow News to hear about our first adventure in trailering the Kiss Me Kate!
