Two new courses have been added to Boaters University, an online learning platform dedicated to making your time on the water safer and more enjoyable. Boaters University is brought to you by the publisher of some of your most trusted magazines, including Power & Motoryacht, SAIL, PassageMaker, Soundings and Anglers Journal.
Offshore Cruising: Preparing Craft & Crew covers everything you need to know to prepare for a voyage: planning, navigation, weather, tracking your boat’s performance, crew responsibilities and best practices, troubleshooting and some common DYI repairs. Instructor Jeff Merrill shares 30 years of hands-on boating experience, advice designed to help students learn the ins and outs of their own vessels and keep systems running at peak performance.
Anchors & Anchoring with gear expert Chuck Hawley is for anyone who wants to sleep better overnight or just relax for a couple hours on the hook. Drawing upon 40 years of voyaging in places around the world, Hawley distills his experiences into practical, easily understood tips and advice.
The course begins by explaining what an anchor is supposed to do: How a small metal contraption can somehow develop thousands of pounds of resistance when it engages the sea floor. Hawley examines a dozen different anchor designs, showing why each is built that way and why it is a best practice to carry different anchors aboard for different conditions. Actual demonstrations illustrate various anchoring techniques using one or two anchors.
As with all Boaters University courses, students enjoy unlimited access to high-quality video instruction, quizzes and class materials. This means that students can learn at their own pace anytime and anywhere there is an Internet connection. With Offshore Cruising and Anchors & Anchoring, students also get direct access to their instructors for answers to specific questions.
